VAT registration and corporate tax registration — are they the same thing?
VAT registration and corporate tax registration — are they the same thing?
These are two entirely separate registrations, each with its own trigger. VAT registration is tied to a number: it becomes mandatory once your taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 over the past 12 months (or are expected to within the next 30 days), with a lower voluntary threshold of AED 187,500 for anyone who wants to register earlier. So a small company can legitimately stay unregistered for VAT while its revenue is still under that line.
Corporate tax registration is different: it's mandatory for nearly every taxable person (a company or an individual running a business) regardless of revenue size — even if the result is a loss or fully exempt. The AED 375,000 threshold there only determines the tax rate owed (0% below it, 9% above), not whether you must register at all. So it's entirely normal for a company to already be registered for corporate tax while it still isn't required to register for VAT — the reverse almost never happens. At RASEEKH we check the status of both registrations separately for every client from day one.
