Zakat and UAE Corporate Tax — Are They the Same Thing?

التساؤل

If I'm already paying 9% Corporate Tax, does that count as paying my zakat too?

الإجابة

The short answer is no. UAE Corporate Tax is a mandatory federal legal obligation under Law No. 47, computed at 9% of accounting net profit after tax adjustments, and filed with the Federal Tax Authority. Zakat, on the other hand, is a personal religious obligation for Muslims — it isn't imposed or collected by the Federal Tax Authority, and it follows an entirely different logic: 2.5% of a specific zakat base (trade goods, cash, and recoverable receivables minus current liabilities), once the nisab and hawl conditions are met.

The zakat base itself, from a purely accounting standpoint, is worked out under the framework set out in AAOIFI Shari'ah Standard No. 35 on Zakah — a professional reference entirely separate from the federal Corporate Tax law.

In the UAE, zakat isn't handled by the tax authority — it runs through dedicated institutions such as the UAE Zakat Fund (established in 2003 and now operating under the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments) and the National Zakat Platform, which has regulated zakat collection since 2024 and licenses the authorized charities that receive it. In other words, zakat has its own institutional track that is entirely separate from the annual Corporate Tax filing.

There's one point of overlap worth knowing about: donations to certain Cabinet-approved public benefit entities — some of which may also be authorized zakat-collecting bodies — can, under specific conditions, be deducted when computing the Corporate Tax base. That's a purely tax-related detail that lowers the amount subject to Corporate Tax; it does not mean paying zakat substitutes for the tax obligation, or the other way around.

The practical takeaway: keep the two calculations completely separate in your books — the Corporate Tax return based on adjusted net profit, and the zakat base based on trade goods, cash, and recoverable receivables. RASEEKH helps you structure your ledger so it serves both calculations correctly without the two ever getting mixed up.
