My company isn't listed on the stock exchange — does ESG/sustainability reporting even apply to me yet?

التساؤل

Is ESG reporting required for my business, or is it still just for large listed companies?

الإجابة

ESG — environmental, social, and governance reporting — comes up in nearly every conversation about the future of business in the UAE, from conferences to advisory memos. What matters is knowing exactly what has become a genuine legal requirement for you as a business owner, and what is still a general market direction or an expectation from investors, banks, and major clients, without any binding legal text behind it.

Companies listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and the Dubai Financial Market are already required to publish an annual sustainability report, covering environmental indicators such as resource use and emissions, social indicators such as employment policy and worker safety, and governance indicators such as board composition and risk management — filed alongside the regular financial statements, not instead of them. That is a clear, existing obligation, not a future or optional direction.

Certain free zones, such as Abu Dhabi Global Market, also run their own disclosure framework tied to company size — meaning the requirement there isn't blanket across every registered free-zone entity, but kicks in after a set period from incorporation for companies that cross a defined revenue threshold, or for asset managers running portfolios above a certain size. For private SMEs outside listed markets and these specific frameworks, formal sustainability reporting itself remains voluntary for now.

What deserves more attention from business owners is the UAE's federal climate law, a completely separate track from ESG reporting in the investment sense — it requires a much broader range of entities, not just listed ones, to measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions through an official platform, with full compliance due by the end of May 2026. A common mistake is treating the two obligations as the same thing, which leads owners to underestimate the one that genuinely does apply to them while worrying about one that may not yet cover their activity.

Even if your company falls outside any mandatory framework today, keeping a basic record of energy and resource consumption and core governance indicators — management structure, anti-corruption policy, safety procedures — makes life considerably easier the day a bank, investor, or government tender asks for exactly that kind of data, and that is happening more often. RASEEKH helps you map out precisely where your business genuinely stands against these obligations, and build a practical step from that rather than reacting to every new administrative trend with the same anxiety.
